Hac Sa Beach
Macau's largest beach is a real swimming beach in season, but it is just as useful for a Coloane walk, park time and a long lunch by the sea.

Hac Sa Beach sits on the eastern side of Coloane and is the largest of Macau's two main public beaches. Its Cantonese name means “black sand”, although visitors should not expect an evenly jet-black shoreline: the appearance varies along the beach and after weather, cleaning and beach-management work. The practical reason to come is broader than the colour of the sand. Hac Sa combines a supervised swimming area in season, a long seafront, a public park and pool, barbecue and picnic facilities, restaurants, and easy access to Coloane's quieter side.
Can you swim at Hac Sa Beach?
Yes. Macau's Marine and Water Bureau treats Hac Sa as an official bathing beach. For 2026, the supervised bathing season runs from 1 May to 31 October; swimming zones are marked with buoys and lifeguards plus nursing staff are deployed during service periods. The Macao Government Tourism Office also describes Hac Sa as suitable for swimming and water activities.
Conditions can change quickly after typhoons, heavy rain, debris or red-tide events, so the flag on the day matters more than a travel guide written months earlier. Obey red flags and beach notices, stay inside the marked swimming zone, and check the Marine and Water Bureau's current beach information before making a special trip to swim.
Beach-safety rule
A calm-looking sea is not permission to ignore the flag system. During the bathing season, use the supervised zone; outside the season there may be no lifeguard service, so treat swimming more cautiously.
What to do besides swimming
- Walk the beachfront and Hac Sa Park. The seafront and adjoining green space make this an easy low-effort break from Cotai's indoor resorts.
- Use the public pool. Hac Sa Park Swimming Pool is seasonal. In 2026 it operates from 1 May to 31 October in three daily sessions, with the first Thursday session normally reserved for pool cleaning unless a public-holiday adjustment applies. Check the Sports Bureau before relying on exact hours.
- Picnic or use the recreation areas. The park has family and exercise facilities. Beach rules prohibit activities such as lighting fires directly on the beach and camping, so use designated facilities rather than improvising on the sand.
- Eat nearby. Hac Sa has long been a food stop as much as a beach stop. Fernando's is the famous Portuguese option, while the surrounding Coloane area gives you other choices if you do not want to plan the day around one restaurant.
- Add a walk in Coloane. Hac Sa is a useful starting or finishing point for a longer outdoors day, with Coloane's walking routes and greener terrain close by.
When to go
For swimming, May to October is the obvious period because that is the official bathing season. Summer is hot, humid and exposed, so early morning or later afternoon is more comfortable for walking. Typhoon season overlaps the warmer months; if a storm has recently passed, check official notices because beaches can temporarily close for debris removal or repairs even after the wider city is functioning normally.
For a non-swimming visit, cooler months can be excellent: you still get the seafront, park and restaurants without organising the day around beach weather.
Getting there
Hac Sa is on Coloane rather than the historic peninsula. Public buses serve the beach area, and a taxi is the simplest point-to-point option from Cotai or Taipa when you value time over cost. Do not assume a casino shuttle will take you directly to the beach. If you are already exploring Coloane Village, combine the two rather than returning to Cotai between them.
| Best for | Swimming in season, a seaside walk, park time, lunch and a quieter Coloane half-day |
|---|---|
| Bathing season | 1 May–31 October in 2026; follow same-day flags and notices |
| Time needed | 1–2 hours for beach/park only; 3–5 hours with lunch and Coloane Village |
| Getting there | Public bus or taxi; easiest as part of a Coloane day |
How to combine Hac Sa with Coloane Village
A good low-stress plan is to explore Coloane Village first, stop for coffee or an egg tart, then continue to Hac Sa for the beach and park. Reverse the order in hot weather if you want to swim earlier. This pairing gives you a side of Macau that feels completely different from the historic-centre crowds and Cotai casino resorts.
FAQ
Is Hac Sa Beach safe for swimming?
It is an official bathing beach with a marked swimming zone and seasonal lifeguard/nursing service. Safety still depends on the same-day flag and notices, especially after storms or unusual sea conditions.
When is the swimming season?
The announced 2026 bathing season runs from 1 May to 31 October.
Is the sand really black?
Hac Sa means “black sand”, but the modern shoreline is not uniformly black. Go for the overall beach-and-Coloane experience rather than expecting a perfectly black strip of sand.
